What is Yoga?

In B.K.S Iyengar “Light on Yoga “we find that the word Yoga comes from Sanskrit and means to ‘bind’, ‘join’ or ‘direct’, it also means ‘union’. Practicing Yoga helps us gain a physically fit and healthy body, it helps us to discipline our minds and balance our emotions.

Is Yoga a religion?

Yoga is not a religion. It does have spiritual philosophy attached to it but you can choose to ignore it if you wish to. I know many Catholics, Christians and Hindu practising Yoga. It’s about your personal development not about what you believe in.

What is the format of a yoga class?

The duration of the Yoga class will be 1 or 1.5 hours. It will start with an hour of asana practice (postures and movement), 10 minutes breathing practice and a 20 minute guided relaxation practice.

Is there anything I have to do before attending the class for the first time?

You need to fill in New Student Questionnaire.

What do I need to bring?

Yoga mat, Yoga block, Yoga belt, cushion, blanket for relaxation and comfy clothes. You can get it from any sport shop or Amazon.

Can I eat before class?

We all have different bodies and different digestion systems but it is advised to practise yoga 1 h after light meal (soup, salad) or 4 hours after full meal. There will be a lot of twisting and pressure on your internal organs.

What If I have medical conditions?

If you have any medical concerns, please check with your doctor before attending the class and inform your yoga teacher before the class starts. Allow 15-20 minutes before the class begins to fill in a health questionnaire, or fill it in on the website (attached to contact details)  and email it back before the class.

What if I am pregnant?

It is always advised to consult your doctor first before starting yoga class if you are pregnant. Yoga has been proven to be beneficial in this period and there are yoga teachers trained for pregnancy yoga in your area, you can check BWY website for details. Because of the high incident of miscarriage during the first trimester, it is not advisable to do yoga until the pregnancy is established – from 15 weeks onwards.

Do I need to be over 18 to attend the class?

Yes. Children and young people under 18 years old need to be assisted with an adult, according to BWY policy working with children and young adults requires additional training and checks.

Do I need to be flexible?

You don’t need to be flexible, thin or fit, you just need to attend with open mind and experience it yourself. You need to fill in New student questionnaire before attending your first class.

Dr McCall (2007) in his book ‘Yoga as medicine’ states that ” if you feel, that you couldn’t possibly do yoga, then yoga might be especially helpful for you. It’s those who find yoga the most challenging, think that they are terrible at it, and can’t seem to quiet their minds, who have the most to gain.”

Can I mix and match the promotions?

If you are paying monthly, you already pay with the discount. That is why on those classes the business card promotion attend 9 classes get 10th free is not available. During Covid this promotion is also not available.

If I paid in advance and can’t make the class/workshop will I get refund?

There is no refund for the block payments or workshops. So if you are unsure you can attend all the classes, simply choose drop in option.
